Walking Trails
Wonderful paths branch throughout our property.
Description
With our sixteen acres of property fronting the Toccoa river, we've created several trails and roads, suitable for users varying from the handicapped to the serious hiking enthusiast. The following is a description of each trail, and in addition, the dirt/gravel roads contiguous to our property which are great for exercise and relaxation.
The following trails are rated on a scale of 1 (easy and accessible to nearly everyone) to 5 (difficult and suitable only to experienced hikers). Extreme weather conditions such as wet soil increase the trail difficulty and frozen terrain make certain trails treacherous.
-
1. The River Walk Class 1
This trail is accessible to everyone from the handicapped and kids in strollers to anyone who enjoys a walk along the beautiful Toccoa River. The area is level and follows over 1000 feet along the river and provides access to the horseshoe pit, downstream fire pit, picnic tables, and wading/swimming/fishing/tubing access to the river. From the level area to the river is steep, however, and caution/close observation of children is imperative. Easy access is provided by driving to the parking lot just inside the fence on the upstream end of our property (drive beyond the pool and make the next left onto Riverview Drive and follow 1/4 mile through our fence to the gravel parking area).
-
2. The Swimming Pool to River Trail Class 1
This trail follows a wide road with easy switchbacks from just west of the pool to the Toccoa River. Walk or drive to the pool and walk through the gate. The trail can be combined with various other trail options back up to the ridge.
-
3. The Toccoa House Connector East Trail Class 3
This trail provides three fairly steep switchbacks before connecting with The Swimming Pool to River Trail. Access is at the right rear of Toccoa House next to the large white pine tree.
-
4. The Toccoa House Connector North Trail Class 4
This trail provides straight access from The Toccoa House to The Swimming Pool to River Trail. Access is at the rear of Toccoa House and is short but steep.
-
5. The Creekside Trail Class 4
This trail follows an old mule logging road from the ridge to the river. It starts near the children's playset along Riverview Circle and travels down to the river. The upper portion is relatively moderate and easy, but the 100 foot section that follows the creek bed is very steep and potentially hazardous, especially for children that may wander to the top of the 30 foot vertical Quarry rock face.
-
6. The Quarry Overlook Class 5
An off-shoot of The Creekside Trail, the overlook provides a great view of the river and riverside grounds. The vertical quarry rock face makes the overlook potentially deadly for the young and inexperienced.
-
7. The Grey Heron Connector to The Creekside Trail Class 3
A short but relatively steep trail from The Grey Heron House to The Creekside Trail follows two switchbacks. Access is provided at the rear right of The Grey Heron House.
-
8. Riverview Circle Class 1
The dirt/gravel road provides a great path for any hiker/walker. The road can connect with the aforementioned trails or make a loop with Hogback Road.
-
9. Riverview Drive Class 1
The dirt/gravel road branches off Riverview Circle, and leads to our riverside area. This road makes a nice loop with either The Creekside Trail or The Swimming Pool to River Trail.
-
10. The Hogback Loop Class 1
This road makes a nice loop with Riverview Circle, which connects at two points.
-
11. The Vehicle Access Route to the Toccoa River Class 1
The riverside area is accessible to all vehicles. Travel east along Riverview Circle one-quarter mile, and turn left at Riverview Drive. Continue a quarter mile through our fence that is clearly marked and park on the gravel.
